This is a special look at the creative logo design process for the THAIN brand that has taken 5 years of design evolution to achieve.

V2. The Thain Creative brand started out with a very urban look, the three rings where symbolic of the creative mind, I did a vector silhouette of myself and combined that with a very techno looking custom type face. The final look was fun and fresh for a freelancer during this time period.

V4. Next, Thain Creative, opened a studio, we wanted a logo that was fresh, contemporary and modern. At the time multi-colour marks where the trend so we came up with the pixel, a landscape with grass and blue skies in a pixel.

V5. Trends die hard. Our new goal was clean and stand the test of time. We started by trying to find a Ambigram type mark, then we tried to incorporate the pixel from the previous logo into the mark. Then we dropped the creative and the pixel. Finally we looked at the roots of design and went with a simple type mark. Enjoy!

Chuck Norris, Mark Plewis, Code Norris
Mon 15/03/10

I would like to take the time to personally introduce the CODE NORRIS to the world. In the website development world there are those that are code ninjas and there are those who are code samurais, but there has never been a code norris, until now...

Mark took valuable hours out of his life to help get this site up and running. He also went above and beyond the call of a favour and took the time to explain and teach. I felt it only fitting to Honour him with this very prestigious title and this post. Some day the shadows of darkness may creep on your website but the code norris will always be there to defend.

These amazing photos by Michael Steingard are of The Creative Space, a co-operative work environment for creatives located in downtown Barrie, Ontario. The Studio has recently moved up the stairs into a 2400 square foot space and has welcomed a host of new businesses and collaborative opportunities. Chad Ballantyne, owner of Rhubarb Media never gave up on the idea and has since brought it into fruition. The Creative Space is the start of a larger artistic community he is trying to spearhead in the city of Barrie to improve arts and culture in the community. THAIN came to Rhubarb Media before it had become The Creative Space. Chad was renting desk space in his studio at the time and had only a few tenants, he started to build and they came. It is really amazing to be part of a noveau way of thinking that is sparking in Cities around the world. THAIN is proud to be part of such a forward way of thinking and plans on being part of the Creative Space for some time to come.

Thu 21/01/10

I just recently attended the Open House of PIE. Barrie's latest and greatest pizza place. However PIE is no ordinary pizza place, it is a Wood Fired Pizza Joint, with all the ingredients to succeed where others have failed. Craig Russell and Randy Feltis two budding entrepreneurs approached THAIN to help them develop a brand for for PIE a new "wood fired pizza joint" in Barrie, Ontario. We wanted to develop a brand that would stand out with unique colours and a very minimal design that leaves everything to your imagination.

We approached the project by doing the exact opposite of the major pizza franchises, no heavy gradients, no exciting movement just plain PIE.
The final result is a Brand that is so simple in execution but playful in interpretation. The Restaurant has the same vibe and feeling and in the end the brand meshes perfectly with the food and atmosphere of the Restaurant.

Yes I know I spelled Labor wrong. Labor of Love is a Meditation CD that helps pregnant women relax and prepare for D-day. Diane Rusk a local Entrepreneur approached Thain to help her get her labor cd website up to par. We started by reinventing the way we wanted women to view this product. The original packaging had the usual romantic red with a woman's pregnant belly in a dramatic pose. I went away from this, trying create the feeling of bliss by using deep blues and pinks and blurs to create a very glowing feel that is only present in pregnant women.

We were asked to redesign the Queens website as a third party. I started the project, by sitting in front of the Queens Hotel Building and hand drawing the ornaments on the signs of the Queens Hotel. We wanted to make sure that the site had the same authentic feel that the Hotel does. By drawing the ornaments we were able to use the same Art Deco era ornamentation from the signs that were most likely created over 50 years or so ago. The Hotel is over a 150 years old and The Queens business was established more than 30 years ago. Thanks Tyler!
